A few takeaways for my fellow
camera enthusiasts.

This is from the perspective of someone who has only done this onece, so take it for what it’s worth.

1. Keep the camera shutter speed 1/500 or higher. The sharpest images I captured of the action were with a higher shutter speed. I unfortunately missed so many shots because I was hanging out in the 1/250 range.

2. Expect to take a lot of photos, because you don’t know when that kick or punch is going to be the last one of that fight. I brought (2) 128GB (fast) SD cards and took over 4,000 images for all of these, and the ones above were the ones that made the cut. I’m happy with about 20% of these, where the lighting, composition, action, and sharpness were all on point.

3. I took two cameras and two lenses with me. For the cameras I brought the Sony a7RV and the Sony a7iii. I used the a7RV much more, because the autofocus is a lot faster. For the two lenses, I brought the Sigma 24-70 2.8 and got most of my favorite shots with that lens. The second lens was the Tamron 70-180 2.8. This telephoto lens didn’t get used as much, but was still useful when the fighters were on the other side of the ring. If I could only take one lens and the lighting was more consistent I think a 24-105mm f/4 would be great.
